Black Queens begin Women’s African Cup of Nations qualifiers in blistering form

Ghana’s senior national women’s team, the Black Queens have begun the Morocco 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers in blistering form after thrashing their Rwandan counterparts 7-0 in the first leg of the first-round qualifiers.

Playing as visitors at the Kigali Pele Stadium, the Ghanaian ladies reminded the rest of Africa that they are still forces to reckon with on the African continent as they handed their opponents a heavy defeat in front of their home fans.

Coach Nora Huptle’s ladies began the rout when Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring in the early stages of the game. Evelyn Badu scored Ghana’s second after nine minutes with Priscilla Adubea adding the third goal after 30 minutes.

The Queens continued their rich form in the second half when Alice Kusi scored Ghana’s fourth goal of the game before Badu added her second goal and Ghana’s fifth goal of the day in the 64th minute.

The story could have been worse for the hosts, but Jennifer Cudjoe missed a penalty in the 65th minute. However, the Ghanaians did not show their opponents any mercy as Anastasia Achiaa added two late goals to end the game 7-0 in favor of the Black Queens.

The result in Kigali means next week’s second leg in Ghana would be a mere academic exercise for the Queens who have vowed to reclaim their rightful place in African women’s soccer.
