MLS Cup 2023: Yaw Yeboah makes history with Columbus Crew
Ghanaian midfielder Yaw Yeboah made history as he became the fourth Ghanaian to win the MLS Cup with Columbus Crew
The Eastern Conference champions defeated Western Conference champions and defending MLS Cup champions LAFC 2-1 to secure their third title.
It was a great weekend for the Ghanaian who scored the Crew’s second goal in the game.
Saturday’s victory at the Lower.com Field means Yaw Yeboah has joined three other Ghanaians – Jonathan Mensah, Harrison Afful, and Emmanuel Boateng – in winning the title with Columbus.
Also making history is Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy who becomes the first ever black coach to win the MLS Cup.
Coach Nancy reacted to that information with mixed feelings.
“I’m so proud of that because there is a lot of work behind that. There was a lot of courage behind that. But I’m not happy at the same time because it’s not normal. Simple as that”, the winning coach noted.
He used the occasion to urge the league to give more black coaches the chance.
“This is something that has to change. And I know that MLS tries to do that. This is not only in MLS, this is everywhere”, he added.
