World Cup qualifiers: Ghana coach names squad as GFA sticks by him
Ghana Football Association (GFA) has shown strong support for Black Stars coach Chris Hughton after widespread rumors of his dismissal.
President of the association, Kurt Okraku, described the rumor as lies before the FA went ahead and released coach Hughton’s squad for this month’s World Cup qualifying games against Madagascar in Kumasi and Comoros in Moroni.
The decision to release the squad was a strong show of support for the Stars coach who has been under intense pressure following the team’s disastrous North American tour.
Coach Chris Hughton apologized for the Black Stars’ horrible performances against Mexico and the USA and promised to improve the team. His current squad may be an attempt to deliver on his promise to improve the team as he invites about seven players who did not take part in the Mexico and the USA games.
Goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott and captain Andre Ayew are making a return to the team alongside defenders Denise Odoi, Daniel Amartey, Kasim Adams as well as midfielders Kamaldeen Sulemana, Osman Bukari, Majeed Ashimeru, and Baba Iddrisu.
The return of captain Andre Ayew, who is currently unattached clearly shows how desperate coach Hughton is. He might have the support of the GFA, but another uninspiring performance against Madagascar and Comoros may cost him his job.
