Commit to a long-term project and allow coaches to work towards it – Gerard Asamoah advises Ghana FA
Former German international, Gerard Asamoah has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to commit to a long-term project and allow Black Stars coaches to stay on the job for a longer period in order to achieve such long-term targets.
According to the former Schalke 04striker, Ghana’s penchant for short-term targets has contributed to the Black Star’s high coaching turnovers. He was of the view that the current coach Chris Hughton be given more time to build a good team.
“What we need is continuity, somebody who will stay there for long and just say hey, we have a project like five years, and this is the coach we are going with”.
He added that giving coaches short contracts will not be good for the team.
“So, it is like having a coach and believing in him; tell him we have a five-year project with you, and this is where we want to reach after five years”, Asamoah told Joy News in Accra.
Gerard Asamoah was born in Ghana and moved to Germany with his family in the 1990s. He started his youth career with Hannover in Germany and offered to play for Ghana. But he had a bitter experience with Ghanaian officials during his first stint with the Black Stars and therefore decided to play for Germany instead.
Despite his bitter experience with Ghanaian soccer officials, the former player still has the interest of Ghana at heart. Recently, he flew in 50 heart surgeons from Germany to Ghana, through his foundation, to treat Ghanaian kids with congenital heart problems.
He played 43 times for Germany and was part of the 2002 squad that got to the final of the FIFA World Cup.
