AFCON 2023: Winner of the tournament to be $7,000,000 richer

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) says the winner of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will receive a cash prize of $7,000,000 which represents a 40% increase in the prize money for Africa’s flagship soccer competition.

The runners-up of the tournament will be $4,000,000 richer while each of the two semi-finalists will receive $2,500,000. All quarterfinalists in the competition are guaranteed $1,300,000 for their efforts.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe says the prize increment will help develop the game of soccer on the continent.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.

“We have increased the prize money of the AFCON to $7,000,000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON prize money. I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations”, the CAF President added.

In sharp contrast, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) says the national federation of the Euro 2024 title winner can get a maximum of 28.25 million euros if the team wins all three games in the opening group stage.

Each of the 24 teams for the Euro 2024 will get a minimum of 9.25 million euros for playing at the month-long tournament in Germany.

This shows the huge gap between European soccer and African soccer.
