AFCON returns to East Africa after 51 years

East African nations Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya have officially been confirmed as the hosts of the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe made the announcement in Cairo after a CAF Executive Committee Meeting.

The 2027 edition of the AFCON will be the first one to be hosted by an East African nation since Ethiopia hosted the tournament in 1976. It will also be the first time that three countries are hosting the competition.

Meanwhile, Morocco will host the 2025 edition of the tournament before the competition moves to East Africa. CAF noted that they took into account the extensive reports of the Independent Assessment Committees which visited and assessed the Bidding Countries before awarding the hosting rights to these countries.

“The CAF Executive Committee (“EXCO”) was impressed by the quality of the presentations by the Bidding Countries and the Reports of Roland Berger and PWC. We want to congratulate Morocco and Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and we are confident that they will fulfill the very high standards that we have set for hosting a successful and world-class AFCON Competition”, the CAF President added.
