Djordje Petrovic: New England Revolution set MLS record after transferring goalie to Chelsea

Major League Soccer (MLS) side New England Revolution have transferred goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to Premier League side Chelsea FC in a deal that sets a record for MLS goalkeepers.

According to the MLS, the deal for the Serbian goalkeeper is among the top 10 all-time transfer fees for any MLS player. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has joined the Premier League side in a deal reported to be around $17.5 million (plus add-ons).

New England have transferred two top goalkeepers to the Premiership within two seasons.  In February 2022, the Revs sold Matt Turner to Arsenal in another impressive deal.

Petrovic was named a 2023 MLS All-Star and finished second in the 2022 MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year voting despite joining New England in the middle of the season. The Serbian goalie is reported to have made 14 clean sheets in 43 regular-season games.

The technical director of New England, Curt Onalfo thanked Djordje for all of his contributions to the Revolution during his time with the club and also wished him well in his new endeavor in Europe.

“Djordje Petrović has been an extremely valuable member of our club and a consummate professional during his time in New England”, Onalfo added.

Petrovic said: “I am happy to be at Chelsea and I’m really excited to get started at this club.

“It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Today I have achieved that goal and I’m so happy”, the Serbian goalie noted.
