Ghana FA begins soul-searching after Black Stars' disastrous AFCON campaign

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executives have embarked on exercises to redeem the sinking image of Ghana soccer.

In their bid to engage Ghanaians after the Black Stars’ disastrous campaign at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Executive Council members of the federation held a meet-the-press exercise with the media in Ghana’s second-largest city Kumasi.

The FA used the media engagement to accept responsibility while soliciting support from the entire nation. Executives of the federation said they will count on the nation’s collective ideas to continue transforming the sport. They reminded stakeholders that “investing from the very basics of our game to the top level of our game is the way to go.”

According to the federation, the last AFCON game against Mozambique has given them the cause to make some far-reaching decisions that will ensure the progress of Ghana soccer.

“It’s been a reflective period for us, and we have to be decisive and take far-reaching decisions that will impact positively in our game”, GFA president Kurt Okraku noted.

The FA said they have sent proposals to the Ghana government with the hope that the government will help them push for a paradigm shift to turn the fortunes of Ghana soccer around.

Among the proposals are the measures that will ensure players compete in the local league a little longer before embarking on foreign deals.

The FA said they are committed to bringing back the lost glory but “will need the collective efforts of all and sundry.”

They also used the occasion to confirm the appointment of Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah as the new Technical Director of the federation.

Professor Mintah is a former Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Education, College of Education Studies, University of Cape Coast, and a former Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, College of Education Studies, University of Cape Coast.
