USMNT Squad for Germany, Ghana friendlies: Maloney earns first-ever call-up

Midfielder Lennard Maloney has earned a first-ever call-up to the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) as the Stars and Stripes play host to Germany and Ghana in two important friendlies.

Maloney, 23, was born in Germany to an American father and a German mother. He has made two appearances for the US U-20 team in 2018 after playing for Germany’s U-18 and U-19 sides.

He joins the rest of the 23-man squad with some topflight experience from Germany after appearing in all six Bundesliga matches this season for newly promoted Heidenheim who are currently occupying the 10th place in the 18-Team league.

Apart from Maloney, Coach Gregg Berhalter kept faith with many old faces in the team. Out of the 23 players, 19 were part of the team during the September camp. The squad also boasts of 13 players who played in the last FIFA World Cup.

“In line with our long-term strategic approach towards 2026, we have a great opportunity to play against two world-class opponents and continue to progress our group of players.

“We are focused on selecting strong rosters and maintaining continuity as much as possible, and this is another important building block”, Berhalter said in a statement.

The Americans will play against Germany on Saturday, October 14 in East Hartford, Connecticut before hosting the Ghanaians three days later at the Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
