United States vow to make amends against Ghana after succumbing to Germany

The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) will go into the Ghana friendly game with bruised egos after succumbing to their German counterparts by 3-1.

Germany proved a better side on Saturday at East Rutherford when they came from a goal down to silence the home crowd.

The Americans started on a positive note and took the lead in the 27th minute through captain Christian Pulisic’s solo effort.

But the Germans tied the game before halftime when captain Ilkay Gundogan tapped in from a close range after US defenders failed to clear the ball.

Germany took control of the game after recess and punished the Americans with two quick goals in the 58th and 61st minute through Niclas Fullkrug and Jamal Musiala.

Reflecting on the loss, midfielder Weston McKennie said they could have done better defensively.

“We could have been a little better preventing the counterattacks and long balls behind us, because Germany have speed, and just closing the middle down, I think would have helped a lot.”

The Americans have an opportunity to make amends when they host the Black Stars of Ghana on Tuesday in Nashville.

Asked about their expectation on Tuesday against the West Africans, both captain Pulisic and McKennie were hopeful that the team will turn things around.
