Serbian Milovan Rajevac returns to Ghana as Black Stars coach

Serbian trainer Milovan Rajevac has returned to Ghana to begin his second stint as the coach of the Black Stars. His immediate assignment is to raise a team to play Zimbabwe in the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Rajevac replaces Charles Akonnor, who was relieved of his post two weeks ago following what the Ghana Football Association (GFA) described as an “erratic start to the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers”.

The Serbian coach has been tasked to build a winsome side to help the Stars win the upcoming AFCON and also qualify the team to the 2022 World Cup.

Rajevac, 67, is returning to Ghana after an 11-year absence following his departure in 2010.

Between 2008 and 2010, the Serbian trainer won the hearts of many Ghanaian soccer fans following his exploits with the Black Stars. He led a Black Stars team that narrowly lost the 2010 AFCON to Egypt and also qualified the team to the last eight of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The coach has called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the Stars as they try to return the team to winning ways in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.

“We all have to work together; GFA, technical team, media, and supporters. The last time we did it, we did it together. I believe we can deliver”, he noted.

Former players Maxwell Konadu and Otto Addo will assist the Serbian while former goalkeeper Richard Kingson who was the trusted goalkeeper for the Serbian between 2008 and 2010 will serve as the goalkeepers’ trainer for the Black Stars.
