Another Player of the Week performance by Chicharito excites Galaxy coach

LA Galaxy star striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez churned out another Player of the Week performance in LA Galaxy’s 3-2 victory over New York Red Bulls over the weekend.

His superlative performance against the red side of New York comes a week after leading LA to a season-opening road win with a brace against Inter Miami.

This time around, Chicharito led his team to a 3-2 victory over Red Bulls at Dignity Health Sports Park registering a hat trick - his first-ever hat trick since joining the Major League Soccer (MLS) last season.

The Mexican striker thus becomes the second player in MLS history to score five goals in the first two games of the season, a feat only managed by Houston Dynamo’s Brian Ching in 2006.

“I thought he had put in a great shift. What we needed to do today was get him in front of goal and give him opportunities because it wasn't about possession and we were scrapping through a lot of that game. It was about his opportunities and he took them well like the goal-scorer that he is.

“He was clever about his movements throughout the day. Again, it was a day of opportunistic actions more than it was anything else, and he gave us a good shift on the defensive side to help us when we needed it”, LA Galaxy coach GregVanney said of Hernandez.

Teammate Jorge Villafana was very happy for Chicharito especially after a difficult maiden season for the Mexican in 2020.

“Really happy for him. He had a tough season last year. Now, he's scoring. He's on fire right now. We want him to keep going like that with this rhythm and obviously, we know the guys we have are going to back him up, give him the balls and everything, so we're working towards that goal, and obviously once that energy gets out there, it pumps us up”, Villafana concluded.
