The Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft has become a traditional launchpad for some aspiring Ghanaian soccer players in North America to launch their professional careers.

According to the MLS, players eligible for selection in SuperDraft 2021 presented by adidas include college seniors, Generation adidas players and players who waived their college eligibility by signing to play in a domestic professional league since the conclusion of the 2019 college soccer season.

And of course, the list also includes some Ghananain players who excelled in their various college games.

Players who will be drafted are expected to “join their MLS clubs for the 2021 preseason, while others may continue to compete for their colleges before reporting to their MLS clubs in late May”.

Among the Ghanaian youngsters who are believed to have caught the eyes of MLS scouts include George Asomani of North Carolina State University, Umar Farouk Osman of Michigan State University as well as Theo Quartey of Villanova.

George Asomani, after playing two seasons at Monroe College, moved to North Carolina and played 18 matches with a combined total minutes of 1598. He scored one goal in NC State’s ACC Tournament quarterfinal match at Pittsburgh on November 10 and made his Wolfpack debut in the season-opening win over Loyola on August 30. He also recorded nine total shots, two of which were on target, and was named to the 2019-20 ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Asomani, who plays as a central midfielder says he “is looking forward to showcasing my talent at the highest level”.

Umar Farouk Osman has remained a constant figure in the Michigan State University soccer program. His superlative performances for the Wolverines have earned him a place in All-Big Ten (2018: Second Team), Big Ten All-Freshman Team (2017), TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Preseason Best XI (2017), Three-time Academic All-Big Ten (2018-20), Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2018), Two-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement (2018-19), among many other accolades.

Theo Quartey has been described by his school as “a skilled athlete with superior quickness and a flair for passing”

In 2019 Quartey finished third on the Wildcats in scoring while starting all of Villanova’s 18 games. He closed the season with two goals and an assist while averaging 76.5 minutes per contest.
