Club History: Ghana’s David Accam secures Nashville SC’s first ever MLS victory

Ghana forward David Accam made club history on Wednesday as his goal secured the first ever Major League Soccer (MLS) victory for his new club Nashville SC.

After a five-month-long break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Accam returned with a bang as his lone goal secured all three points for a club that has overcome a lot in 2020.

The victory over FC Dallas came in the first game involving the two sides after their failure to play in the MLS is Back Tournament.

The MLS had scheduled a pair of matches between Nashville and FC Dallas this week to make up for two of the three matches each club missed at the MLS is Back Tournament as the 2020 MLS resumes.

In a cagey encounter, the Music City club earned its first victory as an expansion team after striker David Accam who was only introduced in the game after the 82nd minute, took on defenders in the box and fired a low far-post shot that found the back of the net in the 86th minute.

In a post match comments, assistant coach Steve Guppy attributed the victory to the total team work of the players.

“We had a college kid [Alistair Johnston] come on making his debut at right back with an incredible block in the last few minutes. We've got Matt LaGrassa making his MLS debut after coming through the USL. So it was a real team effort and obviously David Accam comes on, shows a bit of an unbelievable class. But I have to say Walker Zimmerman's block in the last few minutes was every bit as good as Dave's shot. So, fantastic, for me there were lot of heroes out there today, plus the subs who came on”.

Accam said trials moments like the tornado that hit parts of his home in Nashville early this year and the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic made Wednesday’s goal even more special.

“It's amazing. It's a different feeling because I haven't had this in a long time. Last year and this year have been really tough for me and my family with everything, with the tornadoes and the virus, everything. So I was just happy to be on the field and support us and to score and also help the team get our first win of the season”, the Ghanaian winger noted.

It is even more gratifying to note that Accam’s wife, Florence Dadson Accam, a former striker for Ghana’s female national team, posted a video on Instagram hours before the game challenging his husband not to come home if he fails to score.

The challenge may have spurred on the winger as he managed to score the only goal of the game after playing just eight minutes of the entire duration.
