Minnesota United defender Ike Opara wins the Player of the Week for Week 2


Reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) defender of the year Ike Opara has won the MLS Player of the Week accolade for the second week of the 2020 Season.

The Minnesota United defender was adjudged the Player of the Week for Week 2 of the regular season after scoring two goals in Saturday’s 5-2 victory over San Jose Earthquakes.

The performance of Opara who is in his 10th MLS season and his second season with the Loons, couldn’t go unnoticed. The towering defender was not only the fulcrum of Minnesota’s defense but he also registered two goals on the day to earn the recognition.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of the voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
