Ghana's Lloyd Sam backs New York Red Bulls for 2016 MLS success
Ghana’s Lloyd Sam has tipped New York Red Bulls to surpass whatever record they made in last season’s Major League Soccer (MLS).

In the 2015 MLS, Lloyd Sam and his New York Red Bulls won their second Supporters’ Shield, and second in the last three seasons.

They set a new franchise record with 18 wins in a season and were among the favorites to clinch the MLS Cup but were shocked by Harrison Afful’s Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference Championship.

The Red Bulls were also shocked by Toronto FC in the 2016 season opener.

But Sam, who is playing in his fifth MLS season, believes Red Bulls will turn things around and be the team to beat this season.

He said Red Bulls’ target for the 2016 season is to make it to the MLS Cup final and win.

“We want to make it to this year’s MLS Cup and win it”, he stated succinctly in a short interview with www.ghsoccerus.net.

This, he said was his personal target and that of the team as well. Sam noted it was refreshing to see another Ghanaian, Gideon Baah, joining him at New York Red Bulls.

“It is good to have another Ghanaian here.

“Hopefully, people in Ghana will watch more of our games now that he's here and we can both get more call ups to the national team”, Sam indicated.

For those who still underrate the MLS, Lloyd Sam had a simple message for you: “MLS is stronger than people think and a lot of MLS players are having successes for their various national teams”.

Last season, Sam played as many as 31 games in the regular season, starting in 27 of those games. After playing 2,281 minutes, he scored 10 goals and assisted in seven.

As a winger, Sam had as many as 32 shots with an impressive 20 shots on target.

In the post season playoffs, Sam played and started all the four games Red Bulls played.
