Ghana Football Association gears up for elections


The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun procedures to elect new leadership after more than a year of turbulence following the corruption scandal that rocked Ghana soccer.

According to the Normalization Committee (NC) of the FA, elections shall be conducted for the positions of a President (to be elected by Congress), five persons to be elected by Premier League Clubs onto the Executive Council, three persons to be elected by Division One League clubs onto the Executive Council, two RFA Chairmen to be elected by Regional Chairmen onto the Executive Council as well as one woman to be elected by Women’s Elite Clubs onto the Executive Council.

Nominations for the various positions were opened on Monday September 16 and are due to close on Friday, September 20.

As part of the modalities for the elections, a copy of the completed nomination forms submitted shall be endorsed by the GFA and returned to the candidate. Also, Presidential and RFA Chairman aspirants must present declarations of support from at least five members. Being proposed as a candidate by a member shall be understood as a declaration of support. Each member may only present declaration of support for only one candidate.

If a member presents declaration of support for more than one candidate all of his declarations shall become invalid. Aspirants for the Executive Council are also require to present declaration of support from one member. Being proposed as a candidate by a member shall be understood as a declaration of support. An Extraordinary Congress would be held in Accra to elect the President just like the elections for Constituent body representatives onto the Executive Council. However, elections for RFA Chairpersons shall be held at the respective Regional capitals.

Notice of dates and venues for Congress and all elections will be made on Friday, September 20 followed by submission of reports on all filed nominations on September 25.

Vetting of nominations for all elections begins on September 26 and ends on October 1, 2019.

Elections for RFA Chairpersons will be held on October 18 followed by elections for Constituent Bodies and elections for two RFA Chairpersons on to the Executive Council on October 24. October 25, 2019 has been set aside for the Extraordinary Congress that will elect and swear in a new GFA President.
