AFCON 2019: South Africa stun hosts Egypt, Nigeria eliminate defending champions Cameroon

It was another day of surprises at the 2019 African Cup of nations as Nigeria and south Africa progressed to the last eight of the competition at the expense of defending champions Cameroon and hosts Egypt.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana scored a late winner when Thembinkosi Lorch punished the seven-time champions. With Egypt committing players forward in the final stages, the South Africans had other ideas as they embarked on a quick counter-attack as Thembinkosi Lorch calmly slotted home the only goal of the game.

South Africa will return to the capital to play Nigeria after the Super Eagles eliminated defending champions and fifth-time winners Cameroon.

Nigeria sent Cameroon home thanks to a 3-2 victory in a nail-biting encounter.

Striker Odion Ighalo struck twice and set up Alex Iwobi with the winner after Cameroon had raced from a goal down to lead 2-1 courtesy of goals from Stephen Bahoken and Clinton Njie.

What started as a slow hands back approach from both perennial rivals ended in dramatic fashion with the defending champions scoring two quick goals in the final five minutes of the game to complete their first half comeback.

In the second half, Nigeria responded with two goals in three minutes to re-take the lead.

Ighalo completed his brace in the 62nd minute beating the offside trap and sweeping the ball past Onana after Musa had done well to chest down Collins Awaziem’s cross from the right.

Three minutes later, Iwobi scored what would turn out to be the winner when Cameroon were caught off possession, Ighalo sweeping the ball through to the Arsenal forward who finished calmly past Onana.
