Atlanta United striker Josef Martinez adjudged MLS Player of the Week

Atlanta United striker and the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) MVP, Josef Martinez has won the MLS Player of the Week for Week 14 of the 2019 season after superlative performances that saw him register four goals in two games.

Martinez scored two goals in each of Atlanta’s wins in the past week: 3-0 over Minnesota United at home on Wednesday and 2-0 over the Chicago Fire at home on Saturday.

Martinez has now scored five in his last three games, 10 on the season, which ranks him third in MLS. This marks the seventh time in Martinez’s career that he has been voted MLS Player of the Week.

He won the award twice in 2017, before adding four weekly honors during his 2018 MVP campaign. It’s the 12th time in team history that an Atlanta United player has won the MLS Player of the Week award.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
