Accam joins Ghanaian compatriots in a shock move to Columbus Crew!

Major League Soccer (MLS) side Columbus Crew SC have acquired Ghanaian winger David Accam from the Philadelphia Union in a shock move.

The 28-year-old winger would be more than welcomed to Columbus as he joins a Crew side that already boasts of, at least, three active Ghanaian players as well as some other young Ghanaian talents.

Accam has four goals and two assists this season across eight appearances (four starts) for the Union. His hot start was welcomed after a difficult first campaign with the Union, where he scored just once in 23 matches (12 starts) in 2018.

“This is a decision that we believe is best for the future of the Philadelphia Union in terms of our roster planning in both the short- and mid-term, as well as for David”, Union sporting director, Ernst Tanner said in a club statement.

For his part, Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko said: “We want to welcome David Accam to Columbus Crew SC as David is a fast, dynamic player and a proven attacking threat in MLS. In addition to having experience in the league, we believe David’s specific skillset will help us bolster the attack of our current roster and we look forward to his contributions to the club this season.”

Accam spent his first three MLS seasons with the Chicago Fire, highlighted by setting career highs in goals (14) and assists (8) in 2017.

Meanwhile, the Crew have traded Justin Meram to Atlanta United before the Primary Transfer Window closed, opening a spot and need for Accam in Caleb Porter’s squad.

In exchange of Accam, the Union will get $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, $400,000 in General Allocation Money and an International Roster Spot.

It would be recalled that, Accam scored two goals and assisted another when Philadelphia Union dispatched Columbus Crew 3-0 in the fourth week of the 2019 MLS season. And he did this in style when he outpaced his Ghanaian compatriots Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah (his new teammates) to register his first two goals of the season.

With the exception of defenders Mensah and Afful, Lalas Abubakar is also a trusted Ghanaian member of the club while young Edward Opoku is on loan with USL Championship side Birmingham Legion from the Crew.
