Ghana 2018 AWCON: Who joins Nigeria and South Africa to France 2019 World Cup?


The senior national women’s teams of South Africa and Nigeria have a lot to celebrate even before they battle in the grand finale of the ongoing Ghana 2018 Women’s African Cup of Nations.

The Bayana Bayana of South Africa and the Super Falcons of Nigeria will clash in the final on Saturday at Accra with the hope of adding the ultimate diadem to their already clinched tickets to the 2019 Senior Female FIFA World Cup in France.

South Africa qualified to their first ever Women’s World Cup following a convincing 2-0 semifinal victory over Mali in Cape Coast.

Thembi Kgatlana’s fifth goal of the tournament proved to be the winner for the South Africans after the half-hour mark, with Lebohang Ramalepe ensuring they would go through to face the Super Falcons in Saturday’s final with a second goal in the late stages.

Nigeria who maintained their perfect qualification record defeated Cameroon 4-2 in a penalty shootout after their semifinal clash ended in a stalemate.

On Friday, the third place playoff between Cameroon and Mali will not only be a mere formality for bronze. At stake, apart from the bronze medal, is Africa’s third and final ticket to France 2019.

The winner take all encounter will see Cameroon and Mali in a cagey battle and the dynamics will bring a lot of excitement as Ghana 2018 comes to a close.
