Ghanaian Jonathan Mensah adjudged 2018 best defender for Columbus Crew

Major League Soccer (MLS) side Columbus Crew SC has named Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah as the Club’s Defender of the Year.

Mensah is the second Ghanaian to have won the award after compatriot Harrison Afful was declared the best defender for the Crew in 2016.

The Ghanaian, who was twice named to the’s Team of the Week, was also an initial nominee for the MLS Defender of the Year award before the list was cut down to the final three. He made 26 starts on 27 appearances, helping the Crew to the Post Season Playoffs before losing the Eastern Conference Semifinals to New York Red Bulls.

The season under review saw the Ghanaian center back winning 78 aerial duels and was ranked top-10 in the League in headed clearances with 65. He also scored the game-opening goal in a 3-2 road win over the New York Red Bulls on July 28, 2018.
