Six Ghanaians to play key roles in MLS Cup Playoffs Knockout Round

At least six Ghanaians are hoping to play significant roles for their respective clubs in the Knockout Round of the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Knockout Round of the Postseason are single-elimination games for clubs occupying the third to sixth positions on the league log of both Eastern and Western Conference. Winners from this round will advance to the Conference Semifinals which are two-game series and aggregate-goal format between conference top seed vs. lowest advancing seed from Knockout Round and conference second seed vs. highest seed from Knockout Round.

Of the four Knockout matches, three are most likely to see some Ghanaians involved.

Black Stars midfielder Ebenezer Ofori is likely to star for New York City FC (3rd Eastern Conference) when the blue side of New York welcome Philadelphia Union (6th Eastern Conference) to the Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

The Union will miss the services of Ghanaian forward David Accam who is recuperating from a hernia surgery but Derrick Jones Amaniampong and C J Sapong who are American players with some Ghanaian backgrounds will feature for Philadelphia.

On Thursday, DC United who placed third on the Eastern Conference league table will host Columbus Crew who placed fifth at the Audi Field. At least four Ghanaians will be on queue for selection as Columbus Crew’s Ghanaian defensive trio – Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and Lalas Abubakar – attempt to stop the Wayne Rooney-led attack of DC United.

From the opposite side, defender Kofi Opare is available for selection for the capital club.

The Western Conference encounter between Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake will see winger Latif Blessing in action for LAFC. Latif who was selected among the best MLS players below the age of 22 has already played a major role in LAFC’s qualification to this year’s postseason playoffs.
