Ghana and Columbus Crew defender Jonathan Mensah named in MLS Team of the Week for Week 29

Columbus Crew’s Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has been named in Team of the Week for Week 29 following the Crew’s goalless draw encounter away to the Western Conference leaders FC Dallas over the weekend.

This is the second time the Ghanaian defender has made the Team of the Week in this season’s league following his 22nd start of the year for the Black and Gold. He was also named in the Week 12 Team of the Week.

Over the weekend, Mensah anchored a backline that held FC Dallas to two shots on goal. The scoreless affair marked Dallas’ first time this season being held scoreless at Toyota Stadium.

The central defender totaled 53 touches and 38 passes for a 97.4 percent passing rate as he anchored the Crew defense regarded as the best away performers, with League-leading marks in shutouts (6), goals allowed (16), and shots on target conceded (48).

It would be recalled that Mensah’s club and country teammate Harrison Afful was named to the Team of the Week for Week 27. This year’s MLS has been quite difficult for many Ghanaian players but same cannot be said of the Ghanaian crew in Columbus who seemed to have enjoyed the season so far.

There have been seven Team of the Week honors for the Columbus Crew’s three Ghanaian defenders namely Lalas Abubakar (Weeks 1 and 10), Harrison Afful (Weeks 15, 22 and 27) and Jonatahan Mensah (Weeks 12 and 29).
