Five former Black Stars players tasked to win AFCON 2019 for Ghana

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reconstituted the technical team of the senior national team, the Black Stars, as Ghana embarks on another journey to capture the eluded African Cup of Nations trophy.

The GFA has unveiled former player and coach Kwesi Appiah as the new coach of the Black Stars. Three other former players Ibrahim Tanko (assistant 1), Stephen Appiah (technical and team coordinator) and Richard Kingston (goalkeepers trainer) have also been confirmed members of the newly-look Black Stars backroom staff with Maxwell Konadu, another former player being retained as one of the assistants to Kwesi Appiah.

The five respected former players have been tasked by the GFA to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

GFA Vice President George Afriyie said at the unveiling ceremony that: “Kwesi Appiah should qualify Ghana to AFCON 2019 and win it. That is the target given to him and we all hope he will be able to do that.”

This statement by the FA was directed to the head coach but the consequences thereof will affect his team of assistants as well.

The five former players have five games coming up in the next three months.

Their first assignment will be in June when the Stars play Ethiopia in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers followed by two international friendlies against Mexico and USA on the June 28 and July 1 respectively.

Kwesi Appiah, 56, has vowed to right all the wrongs in his second stint and that all call-ups will be solely based on merit and nothing else.

“I have learnt a lot. There are so many mistakes I believe I did earlier that I am 100% sure I will not repeat.

“I believe every player in Ghana has got a chance in the Black Stars team, players both home and abroad will be invited based on merit”, he assured.
