Seven Ghanaians begin quest for Audi 2016 MLS Cup

The 2016 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season has ended with no Ghanaian replicating winger Lloyd Sam’s last year’s feat with New York Red Bulls when they clinched the Supporters’ Shield.

But apart from defender Gideon Baah who is recuperating from a severe injury, there will be seven known Ghanaians who will try to help their clubs to the Eastern or Western Conference championships or go a step beyond the conference to the Audi 2016 MLS Cup proper.

When Philadelphia Union travel to face the might of Toronto FC in the first of four first round knockout games in the postseason playoffs on Wednesday, young defender Joshua Yaro will be hoping for a positive result that could take them to the next stage of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

On that same day, midfielder Emmanuel Boateng and his LA Galaxy teammates will attempt to book a ticket to the next stage of the Western Conference Playoffs when they invite rivals Real Salt Lake to the StubHub Center.

DC United’s Ghanaian trio Patrick Nyarko, Lloyd Sam and kofi Opare are at home to fellow Ghanaian, Dominic Oduro’s Montreal Impact. With all four Ghanaians available for selection on Thursday’s first round knockout, there could be a massive Ghanaian impact as both sides embark on a journey to the semifinal of the Eastern Conference.

There is another learning curve for young Emmanuel Appiah as Sporting Kansas City play as guests of Seattle Sounders in the last game of the first knockout round of the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Unfortunately, this is the end of the road for Black Stars regulars Harrison Afful and David Accam after Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire failed to go beyond the regular season. Also missing the playoffs is midfielder Gershon Koffie and his New England Revolution who lost the last playoffs spot to Joshua Yaro’s Philadelphia Union thanks to their superior goal advantage.
