Recounting Ghana’s 2015/2016 soccer season: The big winners

Ghana’s 2015/2016 soccer season has finally come to an end after a rancorous start. The season was not entirely free of negativities but as we always say: All’s well that ends well.

Ghana Soccer US (www.ghsoccerus.net) presents to our cherished readers the big winners of the season.

Men’s soccer: Wa All Stars and Bechem United make history

Wa All Stars became the first club from the northern part of Ghana to be crowned champions of Ghana's topflight soccer league.

All Stars annexed the Ghana Premier League title on the penultimate week of the league with a had fought 2-1 victory over closest challengers Aduana Stars and that rendered the final week of matches merely academic.

With their victory, the WA lads have further broken the duopoly of giants Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.

Bechem United also won the 2015/2016 MTN FA Cup after beating second tier side Okwawu United 2-1 in the grand finale.

Bechem who ended the league on the 7th place became the first ever Brong Ahafo Region team to win the FA Cup.

Who becomes the Champion of Champions when Wa All Stars and Bechem United clash before the commencement of next season?

Women’s soccer: Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Police Ladies win big

In the women’s edition of the league, Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Techiman ended Hasaacas’ monopoly in the National Women's League after winning this season's Championship playoff by a lone goal.

The Northern Zone champions and the Southern Zone champions clashed in a playoff after winning their respective zones and at the end of the one-game playoff, the Northern Zone champions clinched the ultimate at the New Cape Coast Stadium.

The game was a repeat of last year's playoff and a sweet revenge for the Techiman ladies.

Meanwhile, Police Ladies won the first ever Sanford Women’s FA Cup competition after beating Fabulous Ladies 2-1 at the grand finale played at the new Cape Coast Stadium.

Faiza Ibrahim scored twice to give Police Ladies their first major trophy while Rafiatu Alhassan got the consolation goal for Fabulous Ladies.

The Ghana Football Association introduced a knock out competition for the female clubs and was fortunate to receive sponsorship from Sanford World Clinics.

The Women’s FA Cup winners, Police Ladies are expected to face League winners Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the Champion of Champions match which will be played before the start of the next soccer season.
