Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers: Ghana drawn in fairly manageable group

Ghana's senior national team the Black Stars have been handed a fairly manageable draw in Africa’s final qualifying round for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana will face Congo, Uganda and usual nemesis Egypt in Group E.

The draw was made in Cairo, Egypt on Friday for the remaining 20 countries from the continent who were paired in five groups of four.

The Black Stars will begin their qualifiers against the Cranes of Uganda on home soil on October 10, 2016 before playing Egypt in the second group game dubbed ‘repeat or revenge’ in Cairo.

Egypt will be hoping for a revenge for their loss against Ghana in 2013, when they failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after losing 7-3 on aggregate to the Black Stars in the final round of the qualifiers. Before their home game against Ghana, Egypt will start their qualifiers with an away encounter against Congo.

They will then play Uganda away and home, respectively, before hosting Congo in their fifth match. The Black Stars will play the Pharaohs in the last group game in Ghana.

In a chat with Accra based Citi FM midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu described the draw as a tricky one.

“It’s a very tricky group but we are ready for everything and that is very important. We will give our sweat and blood to win the group and for me that is the most important thing”.

Teammate Mubarak Wakaso shared Agyeman-Badu’s sentiments.

“It’s a very dicey group that will require hard work and determination”.

Assistant coach Maxwell Konadu tweeted after the draw that “Preparations start from today, now that we know our opponents”.
