Ghana’s Patrick Nyarko makes MLS Week 11 Team of the Week

Ghana and DC United winger Patrick Nyarko has made the Major League Soccer (MLS) Week 11 Team of the Week after capping a superlative performance with one goal, one assist and four interceptions in DC United's 2-0 victory over New York Red Bulls.

The Ghanaian, who was substituted in DC United’s previous game against New York City FC due to illness, made a quick return to the lineup and was influential in the first Atlantic Cup game of the 2016 season on Friday against the Red Bulls.

Nyarko played a big role in DC United’s first goal when he set up Marcelo Sarvas with a perfect through ball into the box before the Brazilian then sent a low cross through the box to Alvaro Saborio, who tapped it into an open net.

The Ghanaian added a goal just before the break, as he poked home Lamar Neagle's cross from the right flank, his third goal of the young season.

The former Chicago Fire winger – now tied for second-leading scorer on the team with three goals this season – recently earned league recognition when he was nominated for Goal of the Week following his April 2 header against the San Jose Earthquakes, and was also named to the Team of the Week bench following an impressive performance in United’s 3-0 win against the New England Revolution on April 23.

Nyarko made the Team of the Week alongside DC United goalkeeper Travis Worra.

He becomes the third Ghanaian to make the MLS Team of the Week list in this season after New England Revolution’s Gershon Koffie and young Emmanuel Boateng of LA Galaxy.

Koffie made the list in Week six following his six interceptions, two shots and 92% passing accuracy rate against Toronto FC.

Then in Week eight, Boateng did not only make the Team of the Week list but was also voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

Boateng earned the honors for his performance in LA Galaxy’s 5-2 win over Real Salt Lake recording the game-winning goal and two assists in just his second-ever MLS start.

The likes of Dominic Oduro, Lloyd Sam, David Accam, Harrison Afful, Joshua Yaro, among others have all received rave remarks in the league as they keep flying the flag of Ghana high.
